CLASSIC DRAW

Lotto 6/49 Logo Lotto 6/49 is one of three national lottery games in Canada. Launched on June 12, 1982, Lotto 6/49 was the first nationwide Canadian lottery game to allow players to choose their own numbers. Previous national games, such as the Olympic Lottery, Loto Canada and Superloto used pre-printed numbers on tickets. Lotto 6/49 led to the gradual phase-out of that type of lottery game in Canada.

From 14th September 2022, the main Lotto 6/49 draw has been known as the Classic Draw. There is a jackpot of CA$5 million and six other ways to win in every draw. The Classic Draw offers all the traditional elements of the game that have been in place since Lotto 6/49 was launched in 1982. Draws are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights.

GOLD BALL DRAW

The Gold Ball Draw is held after the Classic Draw. With the Gold Ball Draw, one selection is drawn at random from all the Gold Ball Draw selections issued. This guarantees that there is a winning ticket for each draw.
For every $3 LOTTO 6/49 selection you purchase, you will automatically receive an entry into the Gold Ball Draw. The Gold Ball Draw selection is an 8-digit number followed by a 2-digit trailer (e.g. 12345678-01).
The Gold Ball Draw starts with 30 balls. Twenty-nine of the balls are white and one is gold. If a white ball is drawn, the $1 million prize is won. If the gold ball is drawn, the Gold Ball jackpot is won.
Whenever a white ball is drawn, the ball is not replaced. Therefore, the odds of winning the Gold Ball jackpot improve each time a white ball is drawn. If not won, the Gold Ball jackpot will increase by $2 million every draw and can grow to more than $60 million!
After the Gold Ball jackpot is won, everything is reset. The jackpot goes back to $10 million and all 30 balls go back into the draw.
Odds of winning in any Gold Ball Draw are one out of the number of Gold Ball Draw selections issued for that draw.

Gameplay
The "Classic Draw", in which six numbers are drawn from a set of 49. If a ticket matches all six numbers, a fixed prize of CA$5 million is won. A bonus number is also drawn, and if a player's ticket matches five numbers and the bonus number, the player wins the "second prize" which is usually between $100,000 and $500,000. Should more than one player win the top or second prize, it is split amongst them. Lesser prizes are also awarded if one matches at least two numbers. Until the September 14, 2022 draw, the top prize of this drawing was the main jackpot, which began at $5 million and increased each time it was not won.

Organization
The Lotto 6/49 game is administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, an alliance of the five regional lottery corporations in Canada.
The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (ILC) is a Canadian organization that operates lottery games. It is owned jointly by the five provincial lottery commissions. ILC's headquarters are located in Toronto, Ontario.
The ILC was established by the provincial lottery organizations in 1976 to operate joint lottery games across Canada. Today it administers three regular games, Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max and Daily Grand. The ILC used to administer Lotto Super 7 and Millionaire Life.
Each provincial organization is responsible for marketing the national games within its own jurisdiction, and revenues are returned to each province in proportion to generated sales.

Prizes and chance of winning
To win a prize, numbers matched must appear in the same selection (line).
The Lotto 6/49 jackpot has historically been allowed to roll if there are no winners, but the Classic Draw has a fixed top prize of CA$5 million.
You have to match all six numbers to win or share the Classic jackpot. If nobody wins, it stays at $5 million for the next draw.
You can also win other prizes by matching fewer numbers, starting with a free play if you get two out of six. There is a Bonus Ball drawn from the remaining 43 numbers after the first six have been selected. This gives you an opportunity to boost your prize payout if you have matched two or five of the main numbers. The table below shows the different ways you can win. The fixed prizes are paid out first before the rest of the pools fund is divided up.
